Equipment needed to make extra Buttery Stovetop Popcorn

  • Large cooking pot with lid
  • Pot holders
  • Large bowl for serving
  • Small pot to melt butter

Ingredients to make extra Buttery Stovetop Popcorn

  • Popcorn kernels
  • Canola oil
  • Butter
  • Salt
  • Seasoning (any kind that you like on popcorn)

A few notes

This popcorn recipe is extremely versatile. And although this recipe is for extra buttery movie theatre style popcorn which is totally gluttonous, you don’t have to have it that way! You can absolutely cook the popcorn and not add the butter or salt. You could also season it with something else that you like. It’s totally up to you!

Some flavor combinations to try

  • Garlic and parmesan
  • Ranch
  • Cinnamon and sugar (use powdered sugar instead of granulated, it’ll coat the popcorn better and not all fall to the bottom of the bowl!)
  • Caramel and chocolate
  • Black pepper
  • BBQ
  • Cheesy

Tip for getting seasonings to stick

In order to help the seasonings stick to the popcorn, you could either use some cooking oil or some melted butter. It’s really just up to you and your preference!

Interesting facts

Did you know that popcorn is a whole grain?! Well….it is! So you can feel a little better about snacking on it often. And maybe a little less guilty about putting some butter on it. But most importantly, making your own seasoning isn’t only easy, it’s also a much healthier alternative to buying store bought seasoning mixes.

Some ways my family enjoys having this popcorn

  • As is (plain, no seasoning or butter), seasoned OR with a little salt and butter
  • In a party mix, even if there’s no party 😏
  • Popcorn balls

Instructions to make extra Buttery Stovetop Popcorn

1. Measure out 2 tablespoons of cooking oil and 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels.

2. On your stove top, heat the 2 tablespoons of cooking oil on medium to high heat. I prefer to use canola oil because it has such a mild flavor that it won’t interfere with the flavor profile of the popcorn or whatever seasoning I’m going to be using.

3. Place a popcorn kernel into the oil and place the cover on the cooking pot.

4. Wait until that kernel pops and once it does, go ahead and add the rest of the popcorn kernels. Place the lid back on the cooking pot.

5. Shake the pot around a bit to get all of the kernels coated in the oil.

6. While the Popcorn is popping, move the pot around a little bit to help move everything around and ensure that all of the kernels are getting popped.

7. Once all of the kernels are popped, turn of the burner and take the pot off of the stove.

8. At this point I like to transfer the popcorn to a separate bowl so that it doesn’t have a chance to burn while sitting in the hot pot.

9. Next, either in the same cooking pot or in a smaller one, melt 4-6 tablespoons of unsalted butter.

10. Once the butter is completely melted, drizzle it over the popcorn and mix well.

11. The last step is to prepare your seasoning if you’re using some, or just had some salt, pepper. Whatever you’d like! And toss the popcorn in the seasoning until it’s well coated.

All that’s left to do now is to dig in! It really is that simple. And it’s SO much healthier for you than store bought bagged popcorn, or the stove top ones that come in the little tin pan. Home made popcorn is such a better alternative.

My husband and I have started a little tradition with our kiddos where Friday night is movie night. Our kids get to choose a movie and I always make some popcorn to enjoy together. It’s been such a fun and lovely memory to make as a family. I never had that growing up myself, so I’m so excited to be doing it with my own children!

Our favorite popcorn party mix

  • Popcorn
  • Pretzels
  • M&M’s or semi sweet chocolate chips
  • Mini marshmallows

Just mix everything together in a bowl and BAM! Done. Quick, easy, but absolutely delicious. Now you can munch away!

And you can totally customize this mix to your liking as well. We tend to lean more on the sweet side rather than the savory, but that’s just us.

Other variations

If you’d like, try adding some nuts and dried fruit. Or various other snack foods like corn chips and pretzel bites. White chocolate chips, caramel chips, yogurt covered raisins or cranberries. There are just so many options! Now I don’t know about you, but they all sound like really tasty options to me! Plus, give me anything with chocolate in it and I’m bound to try it…just saying.

Other ways to share this popcorn

Party mix makes for a great party or get together snack. Game day anyone? BBQ? Holiday party? Birthday party? You name it!

It’s also a great option to be given out as a party favor. Trust me when I say that no mom wants their kiddo coming home from a birthday party with a little bag of cheap and useless toys. Consumables like a small bag of party mix are so much better! And easier on your wallet!

All you have to do is make up a few different variations of party mixes and let each child choose which one they’d like to take a little bag home of. They’ll be so excited to choose, their parents wont be stuck dealing with tiny little useless toys, and you’ll be sending them home with something they’ll actually enjoy! That’s a win-win-win.

Well friends, I hope you go ahead and try this recipe out for yourself so that you too can experience the sheer joy of making your own home made popcorn to your personal liking and doing it in less than 5 minutes. What a treat!
