Who doesn’t love a fresh, hot out of the oven, soft and buttery dinner roll? Seriously, who?! They are HANDS DOWN my favorite side dish. And add honey into the mix? C’MON now! You’ve got to give these Honey Butter Dinner Rolls a try and find out for yourself just how absolutely soft and delicious they are!

Now if honey butter isn’t up your alley, add some of your favorite seasonings to make them savory instead! Garlic and parsley are a wonderful dynamic duo to create a savory dinner roll. We also really enjoy adding Kinder’s Buttery Steakhouse Seasoning to the dough and then just brushing the tops with a bit of butter. So simple, yet so good!

If you’re adding a seasoning blend, then my recommendation is to add 2 tablespoons of the seasoning into the dough. And then assess and adjust the amount to your liking.

Instructions to make Honey Butter Dinner Rolls

1. In the bowl of your stand mixer, combine olive oil, warm water (make sure it is not too hot or it will kill the yeast), sugar and yeast. Whisk gently for a few seconds and then let it rest for 10 minutes until the yeast has bloomed. It should look foamy and fluffy. If not, then you’re yeast is likely dead. Try again with fresh yeast and slightly cooler water.

2. Once your yeast mixture is ready, add the honey, egg, salt and 2 cups of the flour. Attach the dough hook to your mixer and let your mixer run on medium speed for approximately 10-15 minutes while gradually adding the rest of the flour. Mix until the dough is no longer sticking to the sides of the bowl. You may have to scrape down the sides of the bowl a few times and slowly add a few extra tablespoons of flour to accomplish this. But the end result should be a soft looking and slightly sticky dough.

3. Once the dough has come together, transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Shape the dough into a large ball and then divide it into 8-12 equal size pieces. Next, shape those pieces into rolls by bringing the corners in and pinching together to seal. Then with a hand on each side, and the seam side down, rotate each roll a few times counter-clockwise. This helps to round them out and creates a little tension in the dough. Don’t worry about making them look perfectly round! They’re going to rise a little while resting and then again while baking. So they will naturally round themselves out a bit.

4. Now place the shaped rolls into a greased baking dish with the seam side down.

5. Cover the rolls with a damp tea towel or plastic wrap and let them rest for around 10 minutes while preheating your oven to 400 degrees.

6. Once your oven is up to temperature, uncover and bake the rolls for 10-15 minutes. Until the tops are golden brown and if lightly pressed, will bounce back to shape.

7. While the rolls are baking in the oven, go ahead and melt your butter in a pot on the stove or in the microwave.

8. Once the butter is melted, add the honey and mix well to incorporate. Then set it aside.

9. When the rolls are finished baking, pull them out of the oven and brush them with the melted butter and honey mixture. Make sure to coat them generously!

10. Let the rolls cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before serving (if you can wait that long 😏). Then enjoy!

Ingredient substitutions

Olive Oil

I use Extra Virgin Olive Oil in this recipe but that can be substituted with Canola or Vegetable Oil if that’s what you have or prefer.

Sugar

I use Raw Cane Sugar, but have used white sugar in this recipe before and it worked just fine.

Honey

I use raw Honey in this recipe, but really any Honey would work just fine, as well as Agave.

Storing the Honey Butter Dinner Rolls

Store the cooked Honey Butter Yeast Dinner Rolls in an air tight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Reheat as desired and serve with butter or enjoy at room temperature. Totally up to you!

If you wanted to prepare these ahead of time then just freeze them individually wrapped after shaping them, (see printable recipe directions below). Once you’re ready to bake them, just unwrap, place on a greased baking sheet and bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for approximately 25-30 minutes, until the tops are nicely browned. Once they’re finished baking, brush them with the honey butter mixture and serve warm.

Instructions

Making the dough for the rolls

  • In the bowl of your mixer, add the warm water, oil, sugar, honey and yeast. Whisk together to incorporate, then let rest for 10 minutes until the yeast has bloomed (looks puffy).
1 1/4 cups warm water, 1/3 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup raw cane sugar, 1/3 cup raw honey, 2 tbsp active dry yeast
  • Next, add 3.5 cups of the flour, the salt and egg. With the dough hook attachment, mix until well combined.
1 tsp sea salt, 1 egg, 4 cups unbleached flour
  • With your mixer on medium speed, slowly add the remaining half cup of flour. Let the mixer continue on medium speed for the next 10 minutes.
*The dough will be sticky but should come together. If not, turn the speed of your mixer up a bit and let it run for another 2-3 minutes, until the dough is no longer sticking to the sides of the bowl.
  • Generously grease your baking dish and set aside.
  • Once the dough is ready, flour your work surface and turn the dough out onto it. Roll/gently shape the dough into a large ball. Cut the dough into 8 or 12 pieces. Then shape those dough pieces into balls by folding the dough in on itself a few times. Next, gently spin them on the counter in a counter-clockwise motion to shape them each into a ball.
  • Place the dough balls into your baking dish and let them rest for 10-20 minutes while your oven is preheating.
Then, bake for 10-20 minutes (depending on their size) in a 400-degree F oven.

For the topping

  • While the rolls are baking in the oven, go ahead and melt the butter in a stove pot or your microwave.
    2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Add the honey and a pinch of salt. Mix well and set aside.
2 tbsp honey, pinch of salt

Finishing the rolls

  • Once the rolls are finished baking, take them out of the oven and using a basting brush, brush the butter and honey mixture over top. Making sure to coat them well.
  • Serve hot and try not to eat them all!

Notes

As stated above, you can substitute the type of oil, sugar, honey, salt and flour in this recipe and the rolls will turn out just fine.
The smaller you make the rolls, the faster they will cook so just keep that in mind when baking them.
Make ahead and freeze: If you wanted to make these rolls ahead of time, you can! After shaping them into rolls, place them into the freezer on a baking sheet (not touching) for 30 minutes. Then wrap them individually and put back into the freezer. When you’re ready to bake them, just place them onto a greased baking dish or casserole dish and bake at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Or until the tops are golden brown. Then just brush them with the honey butter and serve warm!
to store: keep the rolls in an air tight container and store at room temperature for up to 3 days.
